Wheelchair Rugby Success for 51³Ô¹Ïapp Student /2024/04/19/wheelchair-rugby-success-for-wickersley-student/ Fri, 19 Apr 2024 07:13:30 +0000 /?p=12589

Y11 student, Hayley Cassin has been selected to represent the Talent GB Wheelchair Rugby Squad!

She started playing wheelchair rugby for Yorkshire Lions division 3 and stayed there for two seasons. She then made the move to Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Club in June of 2023. She now plays Premier League and division 1 in rugby 4s, the Paralympic version. Hayley also plays division 2 and development leagues in rugby 5s.

During her time with Lions she was asked to join the N.T.C (National Talent Camps). She has now joined the Talent Squad on their training camps, which are held once a month at Lilleshall Hall National Sports Centre and are run over three days.

The Talent Squad is where players are selected to play in the G.B Squad. When she was fourteen, Hayley played with the Talent Squad against the Netherlands. She has recently been nominated by the National Governing Body GBWR for a Sports Aid award for talented athletes. Hayley has also appeared on the recent ‘I Can Play’ videos for GBWR.

We are extremely proud and can’t wait to see Hayley on our screens soon, playing for GB!

51³Ô¹Ïapp Ski Trip 2024 /2024/04/17/wickersley-ski-trip-2024/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 13:28:40 +0000 /?p=12579

During the second week of the Easter holidays, 94 students travelled to Passo Tonale in Italy for the annual ski trip.

The students had varied ski experience, but all made fantastic progress. Even the students who had never stepped foot in a pair of skis were skiing competently across the mountain by the end of the week. Great effort and resilience was shown by all, as they conquered the set skills led by the ski instructors.

The weather was fantastic throughout the week with bright sunshine most days, and we were even treated to some snow while we were there, which gave students a different but equally enjoyable perspective on skiing.

Well done to all involved, you were a pleasure to have on the trip!

Horse Riding Success for 51³Ô¹Ïapp Student /2024/04/17/horse-riding-success-for-wickersley-student/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 11:41:03 +0000 /?p=12571

Congratulations to 51³Ô¹Ïapp student, Charlotte Ferron on her recent horse-riding success at the Special Olympics. Over the Easter half term, Charlotte had a riding competition with the Special Olympics which lasted 3 days. During the competition, she took on the challenge of riding a horse that was completely new to her, as well as competing in a last-minute dressage test. As a result, she won 3 gold medals for the competition, one for dressage, one for country side challenge and one for horse care and knowledge.

Furthermore, Charlotte was runner up in her category of female young achiever. The award event was a great evening and although Charlotte didn’t win, being nominated was an amazing achievement for her.

Charlotte has been volunteering with the Riding for the Disabled for 4 years now, and has been a rider of the RDA for 13 years. She has been competing with the Special Olympics since she was 8, achieving a silver medal in their UK games in 2017.

As a volunteer for the RDA she has lots of roles and responsibilities, these include mucking out the stables, filling water, hay nets and checking on the general wellbeing of the horses. She assists lessons with other riders who have a range of physical and mental disabilities, some times less severe than herself, and she has started teaching as well which she really enjoys. She is there every Saturday from 9-5 and sometimes longer showing her commitment to the RDA and her passion for riding.

Well done Charlotte, we are very proud all you have overcome and all of your achievements!

Before the Easter break, two 51³Ô¹Ïapp alumni came in to speak to a range of classes from Y10-Y13 about studying Psychology at university . They presented some really useful information about university life and how it differed to being at 51³Ô¹Ïapp. They also offered our Y13 students some helpful revision tips as they go into the final half term before exams start.

It was a really successful morning, and all the Psychology staff at 51³Ô¹Ïapp express their thanks to Alice and Joe for taking the time to come in and speak to the students. It was really helpful in motivating and inspiring all of our students. We look forward to seeing them again next year.
